Why is the programming of hearing aids so important?

In India, many people think that an expensive hearing aid can solve all hearing-related issues without knowing what actually makes the difference. It is quite understandable because modern hearing aids come with artificial intelligence, noise-reduction systems, Bluetooth functionality, speech enhancement, and directional microphones. However, there is one detail that nobody usually takes into account: a hearing aid is just hardware. It will not make much difference until it gets properly programmed.

Why Hearing Aid Programming Is Important: What You Should Know

Inappropriate hearing aid programming may cause you to hear the world around you in an unclear, too sharp, too quiet, or unnatural way. On the contrary, properly configured mid-tier hearing aids may help you enjoy clear and natural sound.

Our specialists at Perfect Hearing & Speech Clinic focus not only on selling hearing aids but also on custom programming according to your ears and brain.

Why Does Hearing Aid Programming Always Come First?

Hearing aid programming is not just a small setting adjustment in your hearing aids; it includes many more things. It is the process that determines how all surrounding sounds reach your brain. Every person’s hearing problem is different, so one setting cannot work for everyone.

An audiologist first understands your hearing issues and your lifestyle, and then sets the hearing aids accordingly. For example, if you are an active person who attends social events, kitty parties, meetings, and gatherings, you need a device that performs well in all situations with better speech quality. You may need 360-degree sound exposure and directionality features so that sound can come from any side. You would also want crystal-clear sound in your ears within milliseconds.

This shows that you need a hearing aid with more advanced features than basic hearing aids. However, without proper programming, even an advanced hearing aid is only hardware. Here, the programming part becomes important. Your audiologist sets the hearing aid with their expertise and knowledge by matching the frequencies according to your hearing loss pattern.

For example, if you have more hearing loss at high frequencies, you may be unable to distinguish between female voices and children’s voices. You may also struggle to hear mobile ringing sounds or distinguish speech sounds like “S,” “F,” “TH,” “SH,” and “CH.” An audiologist programs your hearing aid accordingly so that these specific hearing issues are properly addressed.

Customization of hearing aids improves the quality

When hearing aid comes to the dealer by the manufacturer it is device which is not programmed, audiologist has be decide based on hearing pattern of patient, how much amplification on which point a patient wants, which receiver suits him, what should be the length of the receiver, how much vent a patient needs, which dome suits him etc. there is lots of things that an audiologist has to decide, after all this the programming part comes. A qualified audiologist always works step by step, as when any patient first uses hearing aids, he may or may not need complete gain for the first time, as initially patients require soft sound, and after some time, when he becomes habitual, he may prefer more gain and fully accept the hearing aid. A person who is already using a hearing aid may not want full gain from the first fitting of the hearing aid. This is the decision part of an audiologist and their programming, which makes the difference in hearing aids.

If a hearing aid is not properly programmed, what issues come up

1. Unable to understand speech

Patient is unable to differentiate between the speech sounds, which makes the conversation difficult, for example, whether it is "s" or "ch", etc.

2. Echo voice

The patient's own voice may disturb him. He may feel his own voice too loud or echo-like, which may irritate him.

3. Muffled Speech and Missing Words

Some patients may experience muffled speech or feel that certain words are unclear while using hearing aids. This can occur when the hearing aid settings are not fully optimized for the individual's hearing needs.

For example, a patient visited our clinic with hearing loss in one ear while the other ear had normal hearing. We provided a 3-day hearing aid trial and initially programmed the device according to her audiogram. The amplification was carefully adjusted to match the specific frequencies affected by her hearing loss.

However, during the follow-up call after three days, the patient reported that her own voice sounded muffled and unnatural. She explained that whenever she read a book aloud, she felt as though some of the words she spoke were not being heard clearly by herself. As she had a habit of reading aloud, this listening experience became frustrating and uncomfortable.

The patient described the problem by saying, "When I read aloud, I feel that I have spoken certain words, but I do not hear them properly." This indicated that the hearing aid settings required further fine-tuning to improve her perception of her own voice and speech clarity.

Based on her feedback, our audiologist re-evaluated the hearing aid settings and made additional programming adjustments. After fine-tuning the amplification and speech processing parameters, the patient's listening comfort and speech perception improved significantly.

This example highlights why hearing aid programming is not a one-time process. Follow-up appointments and fine-tuning are often necessary to achieve the most natural and comfortable hearing experience for each individual.

4. Difficulty Identifying the Direction of Sound

Many patients with hearing loss struggle to identify where sounds are coming from. They may hear a voice but have difficulty determining the direction of the speaker, especially in group conversations or noisy environments.

We often meet patients who tell us that while driving a car, they can hear someone speaking from the back seat but cannot clearly identify who is speaking or fully understand what is being said. Similarly, in restaurants, family gatherings, or social events, sounds come from multiple directions at the same time. As a result, patients may find it difficult to focus on the person they want to listen to and may struggle to determine which direction the speech is coming from.

This problem is commonly related to inadequate hearing aid programming, inappropriate microphone settings, or the absence of advanced directional features. Proper hearing aid programming can help improve speech focus, directional awareness, and listening comfort in challenging environments.

Advanced hearing aids use directional microphones and speech enhancement technology to prioritize speech coming from the desired direction while reducing background noise. However, these features must be properly programmed and adjusted according to the patient's listening needs to achieve the best results.

5. Sudden Loud sound

Some sounds that come suddenly, such as utensils falling, knocking on the door, anything touching the table, etc., irritate the patient.

6. Feedback issue

Whistling sounds come from the hearing aids, making them uncomfortable to wear.

Why Expert Audiologists Matter More than Technology Alone

Technology matters; the expertise of the audiologist matters just as much, sometimes even more. Two clinics may sell the same hearing aid model, yet the user experience can feel completely different depending on the fitting quality, counseling, and follow-up care.
