Why Hearing Aids Whistle — and How to Stop It

Still, you’ve probably heard that unexpected high-pitched whistling sound at least once if you or someone you care about has hearing aids. It can happen to anyone, anywhere, and anytime, when you are crossing a road, reading a newspaper, sipping a cup of tea, or watching TV. It can be disturbing; the noise distracts you, and you can't concentrate on what you want to do. But the good news is that this is not permanent in hearing aids; this can be repaired or managed if the fitting is done well.

Perfect Hearing and Speech Clinic provides you with the perfect guidance for the same, along with expert hearing aid fitting, adjustment, servicing, and personalized hearing care solutions to help you enjoy clear and comfortable hearing in your daily life.

What Causes the Whistling Sound?

That sharp squealing noise is known as feedback. Most of the time, this happens when the sound coming from the hearing aid escapes from the ear and goes back into the microphone, creating that unwanted whistling sound. The device then re-amplifies that sound, creating the familiar whistling or buzzing noise. The result is a circle that produces the familiar effervescing or squealing, analogous to what happens when a microphone is too close to a speaker at a live show.

Common reasons why feedback comes from Hearing Aids

Poor fitting of hearing aids

If the hearing aid is not properly fitted in the ear, it may cause leakout, and sounds may come out of the ear. The reason for this can be a loose-fitted earmould or eartip. The most common reason for this can be an ill-fitted dome size, old earmoulds, or a change in the person's body weight.

Excessive Earwax buildup

Sometimes excessive wax in the person's ear blocks the ear canal, which may results bounce back of the sound of the hearing aid, that results feedback.

Volume setting is too high

When the hearing aid user sets the volume too high in noisy places that may result in feedback.

Objects close to the ear

Glasses, hats, phone use, scarves, hands over the ear, and face masks can reflect sound into the microphone and receiver, causing temporary feedback or whistling sounds.

Easy ways to stop the feedback from the hearing aid

Get a proper fitting

An experienced audiologist helps you to get a proper fit and guides you to the right dome size, proper lock, and seal of the earmould. Custom earmoulds give a tight seal and exclude most fit-affiliated

feedback.

Clean your hearing aids

Wipe hearing aid daily, clean tips and earmoulds, and remove visible wax. Don’t stick sharp objects into the ear — see a professional for safe wax removal.

-Lower the volume

If you notice feedback or whistling sounds from your hearing aid, try lowering the volume until you can visit your audiologist. Reducing the volume can temporarily decrease the feedback, and your audiologist can later make permanent setting adjustments to solve the problem properly.

For BTE-Replace Tubing

Old tubing of the BTE hearing aid can become hard, cracked, and also yellow in colour. It is advisable to change it on a regular basis. Depending on usage, wear and tear, and weather conditions, tubing may need replacement every few months.

Try not to keep the objects near the hearing aids

Try to keep phones, caps, scarves, or your hands away from the hearing aid when you notice whistling or feedback sounds.  Moving these objects away can stop the sound immediately.

- Consider newer models

Today's hearing aids have strong feedback cancellation, Artificial Intelligence, and neuro-brain technology.

Summary

Hearing-aid effervescing is common but generally easy to fix. Proper fit, clean cognizance and bias, careful insertion, and timely part reserves break the utmost problems. However, an audiologist can snappily pinpoint the cause and get your hearing back to normal — so exchanges feel natural and comfortable again, if simple fixes don’t stop the feedback.
